Overview
This project explores the intersection of sport and data through a motion design piece focused on figure skating. The goal was to enhance the viewing experience by integrating HUD-style graphics that visualize performance metrics in real time.
Blending elegance with precision, the design system reflects the fluidity of skating while introducing structured, technical overlays that communicate information clearly and engagingly.
The Process
Research & Concept Development
We began by analyzing figure skating performances and existing sports broadcast graphics. This helped define what types of data would be most relevant, such as speed, rotation, and scoring and how they could enhance the narrative.
Branding Book & Visual Direction
A branding book was created to explore the contrast between graceful movement and technical data. We developed a visual direction that combines icy, ethereal tones with clean, futuristic HUD elements.
Data Mapping & Information Hierarchy
Key data points were selected and organized into a clear visual hierarchy. This ensured that information remained readable and supportive of the performance, rather than overwhelming it.
HUD Design System
We designed a cohesive set of HUD elements, including tracking lines, data panels, and typographic overlays. These components were built as a flexible system that could adapt to different moments within the performance.
Motion Design & Animation
Using After Effects, we put together the skater footage alongside the animated HUD elements. Motion was carefully timed to match the choreography, allowing the data to feel integrated and responsive rather than static.
Refinement & Final Composition
Final adjustments focused on timing, clarity, and visual balance. The piece was polished to ensure smooth integration between footage and graphics, resulting in a cohesive and immersive final video.
Figure Skating | HUD Data Visualization
An exploration of movement and metrics, blending elegant choreography with immersive, HUD-inspired data visualization.
Impact & Outcomes
This project reimagines how figure skating can be experienced by layering performance with real-time, HUD-inspired data. Rather than functioning as a passive overlay, the data becomes an active storytelling tool, highlighting speed, precision, and technical difficulty in a way that deepens audience understanding.

By integrating motion graphics seamlessly with choreography, the project creates a balance between artistry and analytics. The elegance of the skater’s movement is preserved, while the structured data system adds clarity and insight, making the performance more accessible to both casual viewers and knowledgeable audiences.
The use of a cohesive HUD design system demonstrates strong thinking in visual hierarchy, modular design, and consistency across complex motion sequences. Each element was designed to be both functional and visually aligned with the overall aesthetic, reinforcing the concept without distracting from the performance.

This project showcases the ability to merge data visualization with cinematic motion design, resulting in a polished, forward-thinking piece that reflects current trends in sports media and broadcast design. It highlights strengths in system design, timing, and storytelling—while pushing beyond traditional approaches to sports visualization.
