Overview
This project reimagines the opening title sequence for One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig, capturing its eerie, gothic atmosphere through motion and typography.
he goal was to visually interpret the novel’s themes : dark magic, tension, and mystery, while creating a cinematic introduction that feels immersive and emotionally charged.

The final piece blends moody visuals, intentional pacing, and refined typography to evoke a sense of unease and intrigue, setting the tone for the narrative before it unfolds.
The Process
Research & Narrative Breakdown
I began by analyzing the themes, tone, and world-building of One Dark Window. Key motifs such as darkness, isolation, and magic informed the visual direction and helped shape the emotional arc of the sequence.
Moodboarding & Visual Direction
Moodboards were created to explore lighting, texture, and atmosphere. I focused on dark palettes, organic textures, and cinematic references to establish a cohesive gothic aesthetic.
Typography & Font Exploration
Type played a central role in the sequence. I explored serif and decorative fonts that felt both historical and haunting, selecting typography that enhances the narrative while remaining legible and expressive in motion.
Styleframes Development
A series of styleframes were designed to map out key visual moments. These frames defined composition, contrast, and pacing, serving as a blueprint for the final animation.
Motion Design & Animation
The sequence was brought to life in After Effects, focusing on subtle, atmospheric movement. Slow transitions, layered textures, and controlled timing were used to build tension and maintain a cinematic rhythm.
Refinement & Final Edit
Final adjustments were made to pacing, transitions, and visual consistency. The sequence was polished to ensure a cohesive flow, resulting in a finished title sequence that feels immersive and narratively aligned.
